How to find words with a known start

Enter the first letter or letter sequence under Starts with. NAM searches for entries whose first three letters are N, A and M, together in that order. Choose Find words to search the bundled two- to fifteen-letter spelling list. Leave the length open when you only know the start; a word length, ending or rack of letters is not required.

Open Add other clues to choose a total word length, fix an ending, or exclude letters. A five-letter word starting with MON has five letters altogether, including MON. MONEY and MONTH fit; MONKEY needs six letters. Each clue applies to the same word, and excluded letters cannot appear even in its start or ending.

This search checks the beginning of a spelling. MARK matches MARKET and MARKING, while NAM matches NAME and NAMING. The sequence does not have to be a grammatical prefix, and the words do not have to share a meaning. Letters outside your clues may repeat freely. For a finite set of tiles, use the word finder from letters; for a confirmed letter in the middle, use known positions. If you only know the last letters, use words ending in letters.

Results come from our bundled general American English ESDB 2026.02.25 list. It includes inflections, uncommon spellings and abbreviations, and may omit a word your puzzle accepts. It provides spelling candidates rather than an official Scrabble, Words With Friends or Wordle validity check. Read about the word source and limits.

Questions about words with a known start

Can I search without an ending, word length or rack?

Yes. Enter just your starting letters to search all supported lengths from two to fifteen letters. Other letters are unrestricted and may repeat. Add a length or ending only when you know it. A finite rack belongs in the main word finder, where each supplied copy is counted.

Do the starting letters have to be next to each other?

Yes. Starts MON requires M, O and N together, in that order, at the beginning. MOAN does not fit because A interrupts that sequence. Having the letters somewhere else or in another order is insufficient. Known positions has a separate Include letters filter for unordered letters anywhere in a word.

How do a start and an ending work together?

Both must match the same spelling. Starts MARK, Ends ING and length nine can match MARKETING. Clues may overlap if the shared positions agree: Starts LEV and Ends VEL can match the five-letter word LEVEL. We keep every clue instead of silently dropping a filter.

Can I share the same starting-letter search?

After a completed search, Copy search link creates a link with your start and search clues in its URL fragment. Anyone receiving that link can read the clues. Opening the link fills the form without automatically searching; choose Find words when ready.
