    Each numbered box is one position in a five-letter word. Leave unknown boxes empty, or paste a pattern such as _R__E. An underscore means exactly one unknown letter.

    For the example, keep R in position 2 and E in position 5, include A, and exclude S. CRANE, CRATE, and GRAPE fit. STARE fails because it contains S; APPLE fails because its second letter is not R.

    Repeated required letters matter: EE asks for at least two Es. A known E counts toward that total. Excluded letters cannot appear anywhere. These are literal word constraints; the tool does not interpret game colors or previous answers.

    Questions about this search

    Do “with these letters” and “containing letters” mean the same thing?

    Use Letters to words for a finite rack: every match must be made from the available copies. Use Known positions → Include letters when certain letters must appear but the remaining letters can be anything. Both methods keep the length at five on this page.

    Can I find five-letter words starting or ending with a letter?

    Yes. In Known positions, put the first letter in box 1 or the last letter in box 5. Use adjacent boxes for a longer beginning or ending. If you also have a rack, use Starts with and Ends with under Refine your search in Letters to words.

    What should I change when there are no matches?

    Remove the least certain position or excluded letter first. Check that required letters are not also excluded; EE requires two Es, including any already in the boxes. A valid search can still have no matches in this particular dictionary. The sample words below are only a small selection.
